What To Look For In Premium Quality Cat Food
Jul 17th, 2010 | Category: Healthy Cat FoodNot sure what kind of cat food to feed your cat? Want to feed high quality cat food but not sure what exactly that is? Maybe this article can help clear up your confusion a little.
Just like humans, cats need certain nutrients to be healthy. There are six essential nutrients that all animals need to be healthy. Those nutrients are: water, protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Without getting too scientific, these nutrients are needed in certain ratios to keep your cat healthy and happy. Almost all commercial cat foods provide the necessary nutrients, but they don’t necessarily provide them in the correct amounts.
Many common brands of cat food supply insufficient amounts of the necessary nutrients. This is not the problem with premium quality cat food. One of the main problems with bargain bran cat foods is that they supply too much fat, causing your cat to become overweight. Another issue with common cat foods is that they use chemical preservatives, fillers, and meat by-products. What exactly is a meat by-product? It is the parts of the animal that are left over from the production of human grade products, like chicken beaks, feet, feathers, etc. There are some cats that can subsist and even thrive on these foods, but there are others who can not get the nutritional value then need from them. Besides, do you really want to feed your cat chicken beaks?
To counter this, many cat owners began making their own high quality cat food. The problem with this is that you really need to know what you are doing. It would be very easy to leave out or not supply enough of the vital nutrients. If you choose to make your own cat food, it is extremely important that you consult your veterinarian first.
The easiest solution to the common cat food issue is to purchase a premium cat food. These are sometime otherwise known as holistic cat foods. Human quality, or holistic cat foods do not use chemicals, fillers, or by-products. But, you should be as careful with these cat foods as you are with any others. Read the labels and make sure they live up to their claims. Also, make sure your cat likes the food. A high quality cat food does not do your cat any good if he will not eat it!
